Why the UK Has One of the Largest Rates of Interracial Marriage

Love is spreading across the racial divide as people from all ethnicities coming together in matrimony. One in ten marriages across Britain is by people from different races. In England and Wales the number is around 2.3 million which represents a 35% increase in the 10-years up to the last census. There are close to 1 million children across the United Kingdom being raised by parents of different race.

As far as history is concerned Britain has always been open to interracial dating. This is evidenced by soldiers from the Roman Empire and Africa marrying British women.

Interracial marriages became normalized as more people embrace diversity in marriages unions between white British women and men from immigrant communities. These unions were common in areas where they were lived together in the first four decades of the 20th century.

Integrated Population
Britain has one of the most racially diverse populations in the world. There number of people from minority groups has increased significantly in the past 20 years and so has interracial marriages. The different racial and groups live together rather than view all minorities as a single identity disconnected from the majority white Brits.

Most of the ethnic mix is found in major cities like Manchester, London and Birmingham. If you are riding the metro train in Birmingham, 2 out of 5 people are likely to be from a different race. This probability jumps to one in two people in areas that are more racially diverse like North London.

British Indians make up the largest minority group with figures from the 2011 census putting them at 1,412,958. London elected a mayor with Indian ancestry. Coming in second are Black African Britons who account for 989,628 of the population. They are also the fastest growing ethnic group in the UK. In addition there are 2,072,994 people belonging to other communities.
People from an African background are five and a half times as likely to be in a mixed relationship as white people, while those of Indian ancestry are three times as likely.

Even though interracial unions are not rare in Britain, there has never been an interracial marriage in the monarch’s history. The royal wedding marked a huge step for the future of interracial dating in the UK.

The interracial royal couple symbolized a real representation of the people. The marriage has influenced social attitudes towards accepting interracial marriages. The wedding makes people realize that love is truly powerful, not see color and cupid can strike anyone despite their status in the society. Through their union more people will drop their bias toward interracial relationships.
